Avid Golfer Makes the Switch to Lithium-Ion Golf Cart Batteries

With the rise of Lithium-ion (Li) technology, many customers are looking to see what the benefits are of taking the plunge and switching from lead-acid to Lithium-Ion batteries. The maintenance-free operation, faster charging, and long life make them an appealing option for many golf cart owners.

Greg Read, a Palm Desert, California Relator, is an avid golfer living in a golf community and was eager to make the change to U.S. Battery’s ESSENTIAL Li®. “I can play three rounds of 18 holes on one single charge, and I still have plenty of juice to drive around the club and to neighbor’s homes,” says Read. U.S. Battery’s ESSENTIAL Li® batteries feature long runtimes over the entire life of the batteries, which makes them an attractive option over lead-acid batteries. The higher power density of Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries helps them to deliver the power golf carts need to travel up steep hills, something Read also experienced after switching from FLA chemistry batteries. “The cart goes up hills easier and at a higher rate of speed than before.”’

Because U.S. Battery ESSENTIAL Li® deep-cycle batteries require no maintenance, golf cart owners like Read don’t have to worry about checking water levels and adding water. “A big bonus for these batteries is when I wash my golf cart. I no longer have to worry about acid stains on my brick pavers or leaking on my garage floor. No more filling your batteries with water, and I have no more battery acid stains on the brick driveway or garage floor!”

The optional Remote Display and sophisticated battery management system (BMS) also makes it easier to monitor the State of Charge of the pack, compared to having to use a hydrometer for FLA batteries. “The electronic charge gauge is easy to see and read,” said Read. “I also like the fact that the batteries will turn off after three days of non-usage, and you simply press a button (on the remote display or on top of the battery) to get going. It’s a great energy saver.”

When purchasing Lithium-ion batteries to replace your lead-acid batteries, the price per battery will be significantly higher upfront; however, customers can replace four to eight lead-acid batteries with two to three US 48VGC2 Lithium-Ion batteries.

In addition, Lithium batteries have a stable cycle life of 3,000+ cycles (charge and discharge cycles). In comparison, lead-acid batteries average between 500 and 1000 cycles, depending on how well they are properly maintained and used.

If the benefits of no maintenance, longer life, and faster charging provide added value, then for some golf car owners, making the switch is worth every penny.
