U.S. Battery Products Help Provide Mobility For Young Girl Stricken With Rare Urea Cycle Disorder

Derek Lackey, of Germantown, MD didn’t know anything about Urea Cycle Disorders (UCD), a genetic disorder that is caused by a mutation resulting in a deficiency of enzymes that are responsible for removing ammonia from the blood stream. When his newborn daughter Isabella, was stricken with this disorder, however, Lackey found out quickly that it is a fatal disease that affects 1 in 8,500 births.

Now four years old, Isabella has suffered through a coma, strokes, heart attacks, a liver transplant, and as a result has limited mobility. To help her get around, Lackey found and restored a 1988 Legend electric people mover, and began to search the internet for information on rebuilding and customizing it for her.

Tri-State Battery helped make the donation to the Lackey family possible.

Lackey contacted U.S. Battery Manufacturing to see what type of six-volt batteries the vehicle would need and in response, U.S. Battery donated two US 2200XC2 batteries to help the Lackey family. Working with U.S. Battery’s dealer Tri-State Battery, the vehicle is now properly powered to help them with Isabella’s mobility needs.

“My family and I were ecstatic when we learned that U.S. Battery was indeed going to donate two deep-cycle batteries for our cause,” said Lackey. “Words cannot describe the support that we experienced with U.S. Battery. Their dedication to the medical community and support of children’s causes is humbling. They exemplify what community-based businesses should stand for and genuinely care for their end users.”

Although there is no known cure for UCD, Lackey and his family are not only dedicated to Isabella but also want to help spread the word about this disease so that others can take immediate action to help their newborn children who may be affected.
