Electric Vehicles Powered By U.S. Battery Finish A Cross-Country Trip To Raise Money For Veterans

U.S. Battery Manufacturing joins Drive for Veterans in celebrating the end of a successful cross-country trip that raised money for wounded veterans. Drive for Veterans consisted of volunteers that took turns driving four Columbia ParCar electric vehicles across the United States, all powered by U.S. Battery products. “We were very happy to provide Drive for Veterans with batteries that allowed them to maintain a constant speed and level of reliability in conditions that most electric vehicles will never experience,” says Don Wallace, U.S. Battery CMO/Executive Vice President. “Each of the low-speed electric vehicles made the entire trip using a single set of our batteries.” Three of the vehicles were equipped with U.S. Battery US2200 6-volt deep-cycle batteries, while one was outfitted with U.S. Battery AGM2224 batteries.

U.S. Battery held its international distributor conference at the Rio hotel and casino, November 17th and 18th in Las Vegas, Nevada. U.S. Battery Helps Michgan State Police Capture RV Battery Thieves

U.S. Battery Manufacturing of Corona, California, aided Michigan State Police in apprehending thieves who were stealing deep-cycle batteries from RV dealerships. After more than 80 batteries were stolen from multiple thefts in a single location, the Michigan State Police Technical Service Unit contacted U.S. Battery Manufacturing to assist them with a plan that would help apprehend the suspects responsible.

Specialist Trooper Paul Gonyeau, of the Michigan State Police Fifth District Technical Services Unit, asked U.S. Battery to supply them with several empty battery cases from the company’s popular RV deep-cycle battery line. “It was subsequently determined that the use of batteries equipped with live GPS units would be the most effective method,” said Specialist Trooper Paul Gonyeau. The plan would allow the team to monitor, identify, and apprehend the suspects involved, without alerting them to the presence of law enforcement. “We were able to make the appropriate modifications and enclose live GPS units in the U.S. Battey cases,” said Gonyeau. “These units were then put into place at the R.V. dealer and monitored.”

According to Gonyeau, it only took a few weeks until the suspects struck again, stealing more than a dozen batteries. Two of the batteries stolen were the U.S. Battery cases equipped with the GPS units. “Within moments of the theft, the suspects were being monitored by law enforcement and stopped within a few miles of the RV dealership with all of the stolen batteries still in their possession. During interviewing, the main suspect admitted to all of the previous thefts,” said Gonyeau. “Thanks to the assistance of U.S. Battery, this operation was very successful!”

U.S. Battery Manufacturing Now Offers Improved UTL-Style Battery Terminals

U.S. Battery Manufacturing now features an improved UTL terminal design, which provides greater resistance to torque failure caused by over tightening and constant re-tightening of leads to the battery. “These new terminals have a unique design in which a stainless steel hex head stud fits loosely in the terminal housing,” says Fred Wehmeyer, Senior VP Engineering for U.S. Battery Manufacturing. “The bottom of the terminal is swaged to capture the bolt and hold it firmly in place within the terminal. The result is a tremendous improvement in its longevity, while reducing the need to constantly re-tighten connecting leads to the battery.”  According to Wehmeyer, the new terminals operate much the same as bolt-thru designs like the offset ‘S’ or ‘L’ terminals that are completely loose until the hardware is installed and tightened to the proper torque value.

Manufactured from pressure die-cast lead alloy, U.S. Battery’s new UTL terminals are more rugged and less prone to failure. They’re installed on all U.S. Battery US12VXC products and average 350 inch-pounds of torque, versus 240 inch-pounds for standard terminals found on most competitive batteries. “Since the recommended torque to tighten UTL terminals is 100+5 inch-pounds, there should never be a torque failure with our unique, pressure die-cast terminals,” says Wehmeyer.

How To Equalize Charge And Prevent Stratification On Deep-Cycle Batteries

Recharging deep-cycle batteries with a charger using a constant voltage or a fixed charge algorithm can, over time, lead to a condition called stratification. Stratification occurs when the acid in the electrolyte separates from the water and settles to the bottom of the battery causing damage to the bottom area of the battery plates.
To prevent stratification, it’s important to regularly perform an equalizing procedure to your batteries.   Equalizing adds an extended charge at the end of the normal charging process necessary to  promote gassing of the electrolyte in order to “re-mix” the acid and water.

THE EQUALIZING PROCESS
The method used to properly equalize batteries is as easy as using a high-quality battery charger that features an automatic equalizing mode, or has the capability to extend or restart the charging process as needed. Follow these procedures to properly equalize charge your batteries.

  1. Make Sure The Battery Is A Flooded Lead-Acid Type.
  2. All Electrical Loads To The Battery Must Be Removed.
  3. Connect Your Charger And Charge The Batteries Until The Charger Terminates A Normal Charge Cycle.

a.) If the charger is equipped with an automatic equalizing mode, make sure the charger is
connected and powered up long enough to complete equalization.

b.) If the charger is not equipped with an automatic equalization mode, assure the charger
completes a full, automatic charge, and then restart the charger by disconnecting AC
power and reconnecting.  The charger should restart and extend the charge time by 1-3
hours

4.   Correct Equalizing Will Cause Gassing And Bubbling Of The Electrolyte.
5.   Take Specific Gravity Readings Every Hour.
6.   You Will Know That The Equalization Process Is Complete: When the specific
gravity values no longer increase during the gassing stage.  If the charger terminates the
charge automatically, before the hourly specific gravity readings are constant, restart the
charger and continue the process until specific gravity readings are constant.

7.  Make Sure To Replace Any Water Lost During The Process.

Equalizing your deep-cycle batteries is a great way to extend battery life and lower operational costs over time. It will also help to remove a buildup of lead sulfate crystals on the battery’s plates, a condition called sulfation. This condition lowers the battery’s ability to take a full-charge and diminishes its full power. Equalizing is just one of several procedures you should be adding to your maintenance schedule every time you service the batteries.  This regular service, including watering, should be performed at least once a month, or more frequently during periods of heavy use.
